How many times can you retake the Sproochentest?

As many as you need. The INL’s own answer is that there is no limit to the number of times, and the only stated condition is that you can register again once the results of the previous test have been obtained.

That condition, rather than any rule about attempts, is what sets the pace. Your next registration waits on your last result, and places are released on the INL’s schedule rather than on request.

Do you have to retake both parts?

The INL does not publish an answer, so this page will not supply one. If it matters to your planning — and it reasonably might — ask the INL directly rather than relying on a third-party page, including this one.

What should you do differently next time?

Start from where the marks are, not from a general resolution to study more. The pass condition is anchored to the speaking test, and the two parts are assessed at different levels.

• If speaking was the weaker half, practise speaking out loud, at pace, with someone or something that answers back. Reading and listening do not train it.
• If the picture task was where it went wrong, that half has a narrow, finishable vocabulary — what is in the image, who is doing what, and where things sit relative to each other.
• If listening was the problem, remember it is assessed a level higher than speaking, and it uses three different kinds of recording. Practising conversation alone leaves two of the three untrained.
• If you ran out of words rather than grammar, build answers from your own life. Real detail is easier to reach for under pressure than invented detail.
• If you froze, the fix is rehearsal under something like exam conditions, not more vocabulary.

How soon can you sit it again?

As soon as two things line up: your previous result has arrived, and a place is open. The first is the INL’s stated condition; the second is the practical constraint, since the INL releases more than 800 places a month and says they go quickly.

Whether to take the earliest available slot is a separate question. Booking a date a few weeks out and working at the weaker half is usually better than repeating the same attempt sooner — nothing about the exam changes between sittings, so something about your preparation has to.

Does a previous attempt count against you?

The INL publishes nothing to suggest it does, and nothing to say how attempts are recorded, so this page will not characterise it either way. What is published is that there is no limit on attempts — which is difficult to reconcile with attempts being held against a candidate.

If this matters for your own file, your commune and the Ministry of Justice are the right people to ask.

What does a fail mean for your nationality application?

The language requirement for naturalisation is evidenced by a pass certificate for the Luxembourgish language test. Without a pass you do not yet have that document, so the application waits on it — but nothing about failing closes the route off. You register again once your result is in.
