How it works
Every unit through square feet
One table, one pivot, and the same arithmetic the Android app runs.
Every conversion here goes through square feet: the amount is turned into square feet using the value for the unit you have, and back out again using the value for the unit you want. That is one table to be right about rather than a grid of pairs, and it is why the answer is the same whichever direction you ask in.
The table was not written for this page. It was generated from the Android app’s own source and checked against that app’s tests, and so was the way the number is printed — the digit grouping, the two decimal places above one, the switch to significant figures below it. Someone holding the phone beside this page is comparing two printed lines, not two quantities, so both had to come across.
Why it asks
A unit is not always one size
The question the tool puts back to you, and the reason it will not answer without it.
Bigha, Biswa and Katha mean different things in different places. A Katha runs from 600 square feet at its smallest to 3,645 at its largest — one word, for plots that differ by a factor of 6.
A converter that picks one of those quietly is not being approximate. It is being wrong for most of the country, and wrong in a way nobody can see: the answer looks exactly as confident as a right one. So when you choose one of those units this tool asks which value you mean, and says nothing until you have told it. The line under the panels always names the figure the answer was built from, so you can check it against a document rather than take it on trust.
This is a reference, not a legal measurement. Local practice varies below the level of a state, and a registry office or a surveyor is what settles a boundary. Use it to understand a listing, not to sign one.

- How big is a bigha?
A bigha has no single size. It is 27,225 square feet as a standard pucca bigha, 27,000 in Uttar Pradesh and about 12,000 in Madhya Pradesh — the state matters.
- Land measurement units in West Bengal
