Katha to decimal

A decimal is one size wherever you are. A katha is not, so there is a line here for every state that has its own — and the square-feet figure each answer was divided from.

Katha and Decimal, both directions, for every region that has its own value.
Region1 Katha in Decimal1 Decimal in Katha
Bihar1 Katha = 1,361.25 sq ft3.130.32
West Bengal1 Katha = 720 sq ft1.650.605
Assam1 Katha = 2,880 sq ft6.610.1512
Jharkhand1 Katha = 1,361.25 sq ft3.130.32
Madhya Pradesh1 Katha = 600 sq ft1.380.726
Nepal border belt1 Katha = 3,645 sq ft8.370.1195

One decimal is 435.6 square feet wherever it is used.

Where each figure comes from

One division, written out, so the answer can be checked rather than trusted.

Every conversion goes through square feet. The amount becomes square feet using the value for the unit you have, then comes back out using the value for the unit you want. That is one table to be right about rather than a grid of pairs, and it is why the answer is the same whichever direction you ask in.

In Bihar, one katha is 1,361.25 square feet and one decimal is 435.6 square feet — so 1,361.25 ÷ 435.6 = 3.13.

The values it divides were not written for this page. They were generated from the Android app’s own source and checked against that app’s tests, and so was the way each number is printed — the digit grouping, the two decimals above one, the switch to significant figures below it. Someone holding the phone beside this page is comparing two printed lines, not two quantities, so both had to come across.

This is a reference, not a legal measurement. Local practice varies below the level of a state, and a registry office or a surveyor is what settles a boundary. Use it to understand a listing, not to sign one.

Why there is a row per region

A unit is not always one size

The reason this page is a table and not a single number.

Katha means different things in different places. Across the regions listed above it runs from 600 square feet at its smallest to 3,645 at its largest — one word, for plots that are not the same size.

A converter that picks one of those quietly is not being approximate. It is being wrong for most of the country, and wrong in a way nobody can see: the answer looks exactly as confident as a right one. So this page prints every value it holds instead of choosing one for you, and each row names the square-feet figure its answer was built from, so you can check it against a document rather than take it on trust.

The app

What the app does that this page does not

This page answers one conversion. The app measures, prices and remembers.

The table above is one screen of Land Unit Converter, and deliberately only that one. The rest is what you want when you are standing on the plot rather than reading about it:

  • Work out the area of a plot from its sides, whether it is a rectangle, a triangle or an odd shape with up to eight corners.
  • Put a rate against that area and get the price, read back in lakh and crore.
  • Keep the conversions you have made, and star the ones you keep coming back to.
  • Hide the units you never use, so the list is the ones you do.
  • Read what a unit actually is — where it is used, and how its size shifts — beside the number.
  • Do all of it with no connection at all.
